Managing Director of Houng Lee Kaba Jacob Limited and former Director of Telecom Fiji Limited, Sanjay Kaba

The bail variation ruling for Managing Director of Houng Lee Kaba Jacob Limited and former Director of Telecom Fiji Limited, Sanjay Kaba will be given next Tuesday.

Kaba appeared before Magistrate Charles Ratakele this morning.

Defence counsel, Vasu Pillay asked the court if his client’s Stop Departure Order could be uplifted as he will be travelling overseas quite a few times until January next year.

Pillay also informed the court that his client is not a flight risk as he has previously taken four overseas trips and returned to Fiji.

He says his client has his business, investments, properties in Fiji and is the primary caregiver to his elderly mother.

The FICAC Counsel says if the Stop Departure Order is to be uplifted then it should be in the possession of FICAC, and Kaba can pick it from them when he travels.

Magistrate Ratakele has informed the parties involved that he will give his ruling next Tuesday.

Kaba is charged with one count of obtaining a financial advantage.

It is alleged that Kaba between 27th January 2017 and 20th January 2019 whilst being a board member of Telecom Fiji Limited and Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited, engaged in conduct namely bidding for a tender through the company Houng Lee Kaba Jacob Limited for providing Project Management services to TFL for TFL's new office and data centre project, and as a result obtained a financial advantage amounting to $766,327.22 between June 2022 and July 2023, knowing that HLK Jacob was not eligible to receive the financial advantage as he had failed to declare his interest as director for HLK Jacob.
