Drainage issues need to be fixed

People have raised serious concerns about the flood-prone road leading to Korociriciri Primary School, which has repeatedly disrupted bus services and student attendance, and are calling on authorities to urgently find a solution.

Yesterday morning, earlier in the week and on many rainy days due to flooding on the road leading to the school, parents were advised to keep their children at home

Residents say the flooding is caused by a longstanding drainage issue, and whenever there is heavy rain, the road becomes completely impassable.

Children and parents are then forced to walk for up to 45 minutes through floodwaters just to reach the nearest bus stop.

fijivillage News reached out to the Fiji Roads Authority for an update on the situation and to find out what steps are being taken to resolve the drainage issue and restore safe access to the school, and also give relief to students and workers who are continously affected.

The FRA says the flooding along Korociriciri Road presents ongoing challenges due to its location in a low-lying, flood-prone area near Waidamudamu Creek.

The Authority says while it continues to monitor and manage the situation as best as possible, effective long-term solutions are closely tied to broader land drainage issues in the surrounding area.

They add that addressing these underlying drainage concerns will require greater cross-agency collaboration.

The FRA says it has noted the concerns and will collaborate with relevant stakeholders to resolve the issue.
